Jaitley, Mahajan, Sushma won't contest

March 23, 2004 15:16 IST

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Arun Jaitley, Pramod Mahajan, Sushma Swaraj and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will not contest the coming Lok Sabha election.

Addressing reporters after a meeting of the party's central election committee in New Delhi on Tuesday, Naqvi said he and others will devote all their energies in campaigning for the party.

Though Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti offered the Bhopal parliamentary constitunecy to Jaitley and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia wanted Mahajan to contest from Jaipur, it was felt these leaders could be better utilised if they concentrated on the party's campaign, Naqvi said.

Meanwhile, Scindia's son, Dushyant Singh, has been nominated from Jhalawar Lok Sabha seat. Scindia vacated teh seat after taking over as chief minister.
