Pakistan have omitted fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for their tour of West Indies this month and recalled Shabbir Ahmed for the two Tests and three one-day internationals.

Akhtar, 29, was ruled out on fitness grounds. The first one-day international is scheduled for May 18.

"Shoaib was considered for the tour and, even though he has made a recovery from his hamstring injury, the selectors believe he needs more time to get back to match fitness," Pakistan Cricket Board official Abbas Zaidi said on Monday.

Akhtar, who has taken 144 Test and 186 one-day wickets, pulled out of the recent India tour due to a hamstring problem.

He recently resumed playing at domestic level but could not convince the selectors he was fit.

Shabbir, who also resumed playing recently after undergoing knee surgery in South Africa last year, was cleared to tour.

"The medical panel has cleared Shabbir for the tour after examining him afresh which is why he is in the squad," Zaidi said.

The selectors also ignored veteran wicketkeeper and former captain Moin Khan who has enjoyed a splendid domestic season hitting five centuries in all forms of the game.

"The selectors felt that Kamran Akmal should go as the only keeper in the side for the sake of continuity and to give him a chance to further establish himself in the side," Zaidi said.

The selectors called up batsman Bazid Khan who last year played in two one-day internationals against Zimbabwe and in a tri-series with Sri Lanka at home.

Bazid is the son of former Test captain and chief executive of the board Majid Khan.
