CRICKET Still not paid for the World Cup The International Cricket Council held back the entire payment due to India from the 2003 World Cup, saying it was unable to assess the likely maximum claim from the Global Cricket Corporation for violation of the ambush marketing clause. Though the exact figure withheld has not been specified, it is estimated to be about $9 million. Indian players refused to sign the original tournament contracts, saying the terms and conditions placed restrictions on their personal endorsements during the World Cup. They finally agreed to participate in the tournament only after the players terms were amended in their favour and which severely diluted the original clauses. In turn, the ICC said it would pay the players only after assessing the damage suffered by the sponsors. The World Cup ended in March, the players remain unpaid for the labours.
