Gupta Murder: Judge Refuses Bail

Asserting that a pediatrician convicted of the second-degree murder of Dr. Deepti Gupta, could flee America, a judge in Pasadena refused him bail. Judge Teri Schwartz of Pasadena Superior Court refused to accept the defense’s plea that Dr. Kevin Paul Anderson, 42, has had no criminal record before he strangulated Dr. Gupta, also a pediatrician, on Nov. 11, 1999—and hence posed no security risk....more

Slavery Case: Man Faces 45 Years In Prison

The jury found Nur Alamin, 40, guilty of one count of conspiracy and two counts each of involuntary servitude and harboring an illegal immigrant. His wife, Rabiya Akhter, had pleaded guilty several weeks ago to one count of harboring an undocumented person. Akhter faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. Alamin faces up to 45 years in prison.
